What are good perchs to get to attract Hummingbirds?

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with 11 Comments

We’ve got a feeder and they come like crazy to get some. We’d also like to get a couple of perches for them to sit on. We’d also like to get some nesting boxes for them to breed in (we think that it would be a very fun thing to watch)

What are the best kind of perches , boxes, and other things that atract Hummerbirds?

      Hummingbirds of Tom Lamb

Here is some footage of hummingbirds at the home of Tom Lamb. His wife liked hummingbirds. He keeps her memory alive by surrounding himself with hummingbirds. I saw dozens of people friendly hummingbirds zipping around his farm in Dixie, Washington. I recorded this video when standing only inches from a feeder. I was so close that you can hear their wings flapping and their high-pitched chirping. He lives in the small town of Dixie. If you are very eager to see his hummingbirds, I’ll tell you where he lives. The best time to see them is near sunset when they are stocking up on sugar for the next day. If you sit really still and offer up a finger, they have been known to take a much needed break on your finger porch. It was fun to watch the hummingbirds battle with the bees for the sweet nectar. The hummingbirds will look you in the eyes as they feed … if you pay close attention, you can see them glancing over at me.

The Ruby Throated Hummingbird is an amazing bird. These birds are the only birds that can fly backwards. God was showing out when he created the hummingbird. They get to Mississippi in March and stay until October then they head for Mexico and South America to winter over. They breed in the USA East of the Mississippi River. They live on an average of 3-4 years. I have been told they come back to the place of thier birth every year. I am feeding over 100 hummers a day and will until the first frost. They mainly eat insects and must have insects to get the nutrients they need. They love the sugar water in the feeders and it provides them with plenty of energy. White Cane Sugar is the only sugar you should use in the feeders since any other kind will set up bacteria and make your birds sick. 1 part sugar to 3/4 water. Best to boil the water and sugar mixture let it cool then fill feeders. I put my feeders on shepherd hooks so I can move them if need be. They are a great addition to any backyard garden.
