In this installment we see several colorful summer species, including a male Allen’s and a male Black-Chinned, showing off his difficult-to-video purple neckband. These birds migrate into the area (Santa Clarita, California) in April/May where they nest and breed over the summer. As temperatures rise, natural nectar sources become mroe scarce and the hummingbird feeders become eagerly sought-after resources. Oddly, many feeders sit idle most of the time as these aggressive little birds vigorously hoard the feeder and spend more time chasing away other birds than feeding! “Why can’t we all just… get along?” (Jack Nicholson, Mars Attacks) :-) The soundtrack is “Oberion” from the Silicon Landscape CD by Technician, available at JCMDI.COM. Happy birding!

Hummingbirds fighting for foods

In spring, lots of hummingbirds move up Prince George BC Canada from south. They love sweet liquid so much. They appear very soon, just few hours after we installed food feeders. Once first bird found the feeder, he or she will inform their flock to come and then occupy it as their own territory. Most interesting thing happened is that there is always a member of flock on duty as a guard to oversee the food feeder. If any intruders show up, they shall fight and chase them away.

I have tried making a sweeter feed mix 2 to 1 sugar water, in an another feeder and attracting the bees away, from the 4 to one hummingbird mix, (didn’t work) the bees just used both feeders, I tried spraying the bees and the feeder with soap and water, it chased the bees away for about 5 min but the soap migrates into the syrup and is not as attractive to the birds, The bees still come.

This wintering over Anna’s hummingbird built her nest in Victoria BC. The first shot was taken Jan.18, 2010. She finished the nest on Jan.28, a ten day build. You can see her building with fluff, twigs and feathers. She wraps and binds the building materials together with meters of spider webs. The finished nest is only 5cm across X 4cm high. I shot several hours of video using a Sony EX-1 camera shooting at 1920x1080i. Music provided by Smart Sounds library. For more info contact; personavideo@shaw.ca

Plethora of Hummingbirds

I took great risk filming these hummingbirds from directly below them. I’m happy to say I survived without incident but my mouth remaind closed. This is outside our house. We normally have six feeders going on this one hanger and go through 6 + quarts of home made suger water daily, yes daily. Needless to say we buy the bulk pack suger. I can’t wait till this fall when they really begin feeding in preperation for their long flight south. I hope to get better video at that time. The sound is never as good as being there but many times it sounded like I was in the middle fo a light sabre fight in a Star Wars movie. Amazing these things haven’t put someones eye out as close and as fast as they fly past. Please enjoy.
