Hummingbird in Action at House

I filmed this today in the front yard. The summer heat has killed off the flowers for the most part but this little bird is going strong.

Anyway to protect a hummingbird nest?

Once the bird has laid her eggs is it possible to arrange a few branches, above the branches the nest is on, in order to help keep the scrub-jays from raiding her nest? Last year a scrub-jay swooped down and took the babies away :(

Baby hummingbird's tongue is lolling out!?

Posted by Filed Under hummingbird with 5 Comments

Yes, baby hummingbird again.
She’s been on our balcony for two days, and the mother has been cheerily feeding her every 20 minutes every day, and the baby has been attempting to fly out of the shoebox nest we made for her, and all was well.
Until this afternoon, I happened to look over and saw that her tongue was sticking out of her wide open beak. I thought she was just really hungry, and that she would be fine once her mom came to feed her, but she came, fed her, and went, and her mouth was still wide open with her tongue lolling out. I’ve never seen a hummingbird do this. I fed her some sugar water in hopes that she would sheathe her tongue by lapping it up, but she refused to drink it, turning her head away and flapping her wings indignantly. All day, she’s just been sitting there with this ridiculous expression on her face, and her tongue has become dry with air exposure!
I have no idea what is going on with this chick and don’t know if she’s acquired some disease and maybe needs medical attention? Should I call some rescue and bring her over?? Or is this some bizarre hummingbird thing I don’t know about? I just don’t want her to die! Please help!

Baby Hummingbird found….?

Posted by Filed Under hummingbird with 3 Comments

I was cutting down some branches when i heard a peeping noise coming from the branches i cut down and found a baby hummingbird…it wasnt too young because it had a good amount of feathers. I wanted to put it back in the tree, but the nest was broken and was full of mites and so was the baby. The nest by itself would have fallen down becasue it was so unstable…so i put the baby and its nest in a shoebox and put it back in the tree..i saw the parents flying around and i went inside…i checked went outside again an hour later and i didnt hear him crying anymore….do you think he is ok now or should i take him to a rescue???

Is There Something I Can Spray On A Yellow-Jackets' Nest To Kill Them?

Posted by Filed Under hummingbird with 6 Comments

I have two hummingbird feeders close to each other at my house and sadly, the only place I can hang them is near a yellow-jackets’ nest. One hummingbird has already gotten stung and killed by them. So is there a yellow-jacket killer I can spray on the nest to keep them away? Thanks.
