As usual they are ornery as ever. I’m trying different angles and distances to get the best focus I can with this little camera. I can’t afford a more expensive model yet so I’ll keep experimenting. We has some black-chins in this one and a brief cameo from a Rufous. Still not able to get the Broad-tail in all it’s glory.

Praying Mantis vs Hummingbird

This praying mantis sat on the hummingbird feeder for 24 hours waiting for a hummingbird to get close enough to catch. I decided to set up the video camera to see what I could get on film. It appears the praying mantis was successful, but I do not have video of the aftermath. This will have to do.

Oregon Hummingbird Migration?

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with 1 Comment

Hi Everyone!

I moved to Oregon this last summer, and I put out hummingbird feeders like I used to in northern Idaho. We used to take the feeders down in late July – early August, but that was because of Idaho’s winter climate. In Oregon, when is the best time to take them down? I still have my one hummer that comes on a daily basis, but its October now, and he hasn’t headed south for the winter. Do Oregon hummingbirds stay here year-round (I’m in Salem), or do they migrate to Latin America like most species? I’m just wanting to know if I need to take my feeder down to kinda force him to migrate, or if they stay during the winters. Thanks!

Hummingbird Flower Duet

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with No Comments

A collection of hummingbird sequences set to “The Flower Duet” (Sous le dôme épais) from Léo Delibes’ opera Lakmé. Best view is fullscreen 480 or 720. The red trumpets were not exactly like white jasmine or rose, but they worked out well. Taken in mid-August with GoPRO HD on tripod, mode r3. Slow motion sequences were 20% for the birds and 40% for the insects. Music: www.youtube.com (Anna Netrebko and Elīna Garanca)
