Praying Mantis vs Hummingbird

October 15, 2011 Hummingbird Bird Feeder

This praying mantis sat on the hummingbird feeder for 24 hours waiting for a hummingbird to get close enough to catch. I decided to set up the video camera to see what I could get on film. It appears the praying mantis was successful, but I do not have video of the aftermath. This will have to do.

    the uploader did the right thing and let nature take its course. if you removed the mantis then youre interfering with the circle. lions gotta eat the zebra, sharks gotta eat the seal, its the way of the world. beauty doesnt get you a free pass.

    In case some of you missed it, the mantis rips a hummingbird to the ground at the very end of the video.

    Adult praying mantises fly you guys. Ever thought that it’s possible for it to get up there by itself?

  4. amazingdany says:

    I felt bad for the birdie and then, the mantis has the right to feed itself.

    The law of the forest says so.

    Im pretty sure the owner didn’t order a praying mantis egg, hatch it, and raise it just to put it on a bird feeder. Actually praying mantises are evolving to life on feeders. The same thing would happen to ANY one who puts out nectar for hummers. TRY IT!! IT’S EVOLUTION.

    @divine0enigma haha shit almost missed it..

    @B1N4RYGH0ST Maybe you don’t know that Praying mantis can fly. It wouldn’t have to be placed up there.

  12. B1N4RYGH0ST says:

    @frogsoda I guess the owner of the video ought to go out now and put up a praying mantis feeder. And let those beautiful Humming Birds alone.

  13. frogsoda says:

    @B1N4RYGH0ST WHY?

  14. B1N4RYGH0ST says:

    @frogsoda So the Humming Birds get to enjoy the same freedoms as the Praying Mantis.

  15. frogsoda says:

    @B1N4RYGH0ST They already do. The OP already said that she has “,,,hummingbird feeders all up and down my porch.” The birds could have just gone to another feeder.

  16. B1N4RYGH0ST says:

    @aggiemomrulz You remind me of that photographer who followed the little black child filming as he went while a vulture was stalking the child, he let the vulture attack and kill her, got a nobel peace prize and then topped himself the following year. You claim to like humming birds, but don’t mind filming a mantis stalking. You’re no better than that Photo Journalist. Have a great one.

    @B1N4RYGH0ST OVER THE LINE!

  18. STKDstroyer18 says:

    Little known fact amongst most youtubers is that a preying mantis can indeed fly.

  19. deadlytaco101 says:

    @aggiemomrulz yes the circle of life is hard to see things die sometimes it’s just nature

    @B1N4RYGH0ST

    totally unrelated how dare you talk to this person like this and describe them in such a bad comparrison. The mantis has seen an oppertunity and taken it. A person is quite different then a bird and if you cant distinguish then go back to school.

  21. B1N4RYGH0ST says:

    @flipinmental Life is life…suck it up!

  22. fishfreak95 says:

    Male mantises can Fly. Thats probably how it got there xD

  23. rotnflesh says:

    @B1N4RYGH0ST I’ve had a praying mantis dive-bomb me when I was working as a lifeguard at a public pool…they can go anywhere a bird can go without any troubles.

  24. Icewind007 says:

    @mariesadler Why would you knock the mantis off the feeder? It is FEEDING isn’t it?
