Modification for hummingbird feeder?

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I bought a couple of hummingbird feeders last week. They’ve been hanging for a few days and no hummingbirds but for my area it’s still early. I’ve seen the bees/wasp trying to get a sip of the nectar, but I’m not sure if they’re actually able to get any of the sweet nectar or are hopelessly wasting energy. What I would like to do is modify one of the feeders so that bees/wasp would have an easier time in obtaining the nectar. The type of hummingbird feeder I have has six flowers with a
small opening which goes down probably about half of an inch to the nectar. What I would like it to modify the the feeder so that bees and wasp can benefit from the nectar, any ideas?

What can I do to keep bees away from the hummingbird feeders?

Even though there are ‘guards,’ the bees are so thick around all four openings that it looks like a hive!
(I don’t want to harm the bees)

Bees in my humming bird feeder, how do I prevent them and keep the hummingbirds?

I have tried making a sweeter feed mix 2 to 1 sugar water, in an another feeder and attracting the bees away, from the 4 to one hummingbird mix, (didn’t work) the bees just used both feeders, I tried spraying the bees and the feeder with soap and water, it chased the bees away for about 5 min but the soap migrates into the syrup and is not as attractive to the birds, The bees still come.

Hummingbird feeder taken over by Bees!?

There was only one bee yesterday and I thought great, there’s enough to go around. But today it looks like LAX for bees—there are loads of ‘em coming and going and hanging in clumps from the dripper! Now, I’m no bee keeper and don’t want to end up as a pin cusion, so first, how do I extracate my feeder (I know smoke sedates them or something but I don’t know how much smoke I’d need…even if I had the stones to try that anyway). Second, will I ever be able to put the feeder back up (not sure how good bee memory is or if they take notes and make little bee maps when they get back to the hive) or are my hummers just S.O.L.?

Those of us w/o stingers thank you in advance for your help.

The last week and a half we have had no rain here in Southeast Missouri, and it is so hot here that for the last few days dozens of honey bees have been draining our hummingbird feeder dry! At first it was irritating, but I really don’t blame the poor things. So we just let them do what comes naturally, and drink away! Hopefully we will get some rain soon so they can go back to their flowers. But we did get a pretty cool video out of it! I hope you all like it!
