Hummingbird Flower Duet

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with No Comments

A collection of hummingbird sequences set to “The Flower Duet” (Sous le dôme épais) from Léo Delibes’ opera Lakmé. Best view is fullscreen 480 or 720. The red trumpets were not exactly like white jasmine or rose, but they worked out well. Taken in mid-August with GoPRO HD on tripod, mode r3. Slow motion sequences were 20% for the birds and 40% for the insects. Music: www.youtube.com (Anna Netrebko and Elīna Garanca)

I filmed this today in the front yard. The summer heat has killed off the flowers for the most part but this little bird is going strong.

Now that all the hummingbirds are nesting, it’s our weekly duty to refresh their feeders. While succulent flowers are best, here’s some insight into what we feel works best and those we most likely will not use again.

HELP! How do you get a hummingbird out of a skylight?

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with 3 Comments

There is a poor little hummingbird stuck in the skylight in my dads garage, we put a red box and some flowers on the floor beneath him but he doesn’t seem to notice. He perches against the wall and every couple seconds he buzzes around and hits the skylight and if we get close he starts cheeping, any suggestions on how to get him down??

Systemic fertilizer / insecticide harmful to butterflies, bees and hummingbirds?

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I asked this question earlier and I know the fertizer in the product is not harmful but what about the insecticide in it?
Since it is adsorbed through the roots of the plant…

The product says not to use on plants intended for food,
so what about the nector in the flowers that the hummers and butterflies are after?

I’ve searched the web and called nurseries…cant find what I’m looking for. Does anyone know where I could find out?
thanks.

One of my favorite nature vids I’ve done! It was so awesome being able to earn the hummingbird’s trust! It took nearly an hour before they got used to my presence, and after that they would come within inches of me! Hope you enjoy, and thanks for watching!

Modification for hummingbird feeder?

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I bought a couple of hummingbird feeders last week. They’ve been hanging for a few days and no hummingbirds but for my area it’s still early. I’ve seen the bees/wasp trying to get a sip of the nectar, but I’m not sure if they’re actually able to get any of the sweet nectar or are hopelessly wasting energy. What I would like to do is modify one of the feeders so that bees/wasp would have an easier time in obtaining the nectar. The type of hummingbird feeder I have has six flowers with a
small opening which goes down probably about half of an inch to the nectar. What I would like it to modify the the feeder so that bees and wasp can benefit from the nectar, any ideas?

How do I get hummingbirds to move to another location?

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with 3 Comments

We are having some serious issues with hummingbirds at our porch, and our front door area on our acreage. We do have flowers around the porch, and reading I see that red ones attract them, so I am going to change that… BUT… talking with someone at the local greenhouse, I am to understand that as they have been coming for years, and continue to multiply in numbers, and have started to become aggressive last year… and are likely to be more so this year, or so I am told… I want to have them move to a new location on our acreage. I am told that simply placing feeders in new areas will not work… as they will return to the porch area anyway.. in addition to the feeders. I do not want to hurt them, as I know they are helpful, but I do not want to see them get hurt either, by becoming aggressive with humans… as almost happened last year. Also… with the barn cats… I want them to be up a bit higher, as we have some running around our yard this year… and though they can climb… making it not so easy for them to get at them, when they are buzzing around the lower areas of the porch, and the flower beds surrounding, would be nice too. HELP!!! I am at a loss on this!
