Oregon Hummingbird Migration?

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with 1 Comment

Hi Everyone!

I moved to Oregon this last summer, and I put out hummingbird feeders like I used to in northern Idaho. We used to take the feeders down in late July – early August, but that was because of Idaho’s winter climate. In Oregon, when is the best time to take them down? I still have my one hummer that comes on a daily basis, but its October now, and he hasn’t headed south for the winter. Do Oregon hummingbirds stay here year-round (I’m in Salem), or do they migrate to Latin America like most species? I’m just wanting to know if I need to take my feeder down to kinda force him to migrate, or if they stay during the winters. Thanks!

Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds At Front Yard Dr. JB’s Feeder 8-2-2011

Little Hummers at the front feeder. We can see this feeder from the home office. It is a Dr. JB’s Hummingbird Feeder, the BEST feeder we have ever purchased and used on a regular basis. There is a dominant male Ruby-Throated Hummer usually guarding this feeder. Half of the time he will sit in the Dogwood tree just out of view and wait for other Hummers to try to feed, then zoom in and chase them. The other half of his time he sits on the feeder and waits for Hummers to fly in over the house roof and scares them away – he’s a trip!

Hummers Going Crazy ! (At a Dr. JB’s Hummingbird Feeder) 7-17-2011

Little Hummingbirds feeding at one of our Dr. JB’s Hummingbird Feeders. There are over a dozen hummingbirds that regularly use the feeders. Some of them are very protective of the feeders. These few are overwhelmed at trying to keep the others away due to the large population of hummingbirds. These are the BEST nectar feeders to buy. They are top-rack dishwasher safe and are extremely sturdy and easy to fill & Made In The USA – Awesome!

Does powdered hummingbird food go stale?

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with 1 Comment

When I put out our hummingbird feeder in May, I used some powdered food mix left over from last year (and I think some of the packets may be some even older than that). So far I’ve only seen an occasional hummer stop and check out the feeder, maybe take a sip or two, but then fly on. Now granted it’s typically July before any take up long-term residence around our yard, but I am concerned that the food has lost its "zip" in being so old. If so, could I just add some regular sugar to it to revitalize it? Or is it best to just dispose of it?

Hummingbirds “Feeding Time”

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with No Comments

While reviewing over 14 hours of raw footage for my film “Hummer Sonata,” I noticed that the mother hummingbird returned to the nest at regular intervals — every 20 minutes or so — to feed her young. This video is a montage of some of that footage. I hope you enjoy it.

Allens Sipping from a Small Feeder

I made several feeders using clean spice jars with red lids. They are placed all over the deck and hummingbirds will go to each one and sip. Here I am holding one of the feeders and the hummer rests on my finger. Having multiple feeders has increased the number of birds visiting this year. Filmed with a point and shoot Canon PowerShot 750 Digital Elph on the macro setting. Here is a picture of one of the feeders hanging. www.flickr.com Very easy to make and a good way to recycle your spice jars!
