loving the hummingbird juice. Any recommendations? I can’t find any wasp nests. Those pests are ruining our time on the front porch. Thanks!

A hummingbird needs 10 grams of sugar and 8 grams of protein each day. One honeysuckle flower provides 20 mg of sugar and 10 mg of protein. One nasturtium flower provides 10 mg of sugar and 10 mg of protein. It takes 20 seconds to feed from a nasturtium and 10 seconds per honeysuckle. How many minutes does it take to get exactly the food it needs? (1 gram equals 1000 mg.)

HELP!!! I FOUND A BABY HUMMINGBIRD!! WHAT TO DO?

Posted by Filed Under hummingbird with 9 Comments

I found a baby hummingbird in our game room. It was on the floor, and I couldn’t find the nest anywhere, believe me I looked. And the thing is that the game room has been closed for two days so I don’t think the mother has been there since then. And I don’t know what to do, I put the hummingbird outside of the game room entrance and left it there for a little while but it didn’t move and I didn’t see another hummingbird anywhere. So I put it in a warm place, and now WHAT DO I DO??? is it possible to keep the hummingbird and raise it??
thanks for the help, I put it outside near the game room in a old nest that I found in a tree, [right next to a hummingbird flower tree] so I’m hoping it will survive, and hummingbirds dont have a sense of smell so they wont know I touched it. So I’m just going to let nature take its course, its a beautiful bird I hope it lives!

Hummingbird Ruby Throated

The first segment was taken at 6:15 am and its still dark at that time of the morning. Not the best quality, but shows interaction of the birds throughout the day. Very territorial as they are I am only 2 meters away on parts of this video sitting outdoors. To my surprise the Downy Woodpecker though hesitant did visit the feeder while I sat there towards the end… Disclaimer – I do not own the rites to this music. All credit goes to the original artist. I filmed this today in the front yard. The summer heat has killed off the flowers for the most part but this little bird is going strong.

Why is mother nature so cruel?

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with 7 Comments

Think about it. Suppose a hummingbird who just finished hatching her eggs is trying to find food for her offspring. The mother leaves the nest and flies to another location to find some worm to catch. On her way down, the mother is caught by an eagle. The eagle eats her. The mother died. Now, who is going to take care of the offspring? The offspring are going to die slowly from starvation.

That is just cruel. These tragedies happen in mother nature all the time. Is this just how mother nature is supposed to work?
