How can i nurse a hummingbird?

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

We found a hummingbird out side my house laying. It can only stay up if you sit it up. The wing looks messed up. I tried to feed it sugar water out of a water bottle cap because I don’t have a hummimgbird feeder or a syringe or dropper. HELP!

Baby hummingbird's tongue is lolling out!?

Posted by Filed Under hummingbird with 5 Comments

Yes, baby hummingbird again.
She’s been on our balcony for two days, and the mother has been cheerily feeding her every 20 minutes every day, and the baby has been attempting to fly out of the shoebox nest we made for her, and all was well.
Until this afternoon, I happened to look over and saw that her tongue was sticking out of her wide open beak. I thought she was just really hungry, and that she would be fine once her mom came to feed her, but she came, fed her, and went, and her mouth was still wide open with her tongue lolling out. I’ve never seen a hummingbird do this. I fed her some sugar water in hopes that she would sheathe her tongue by lapping it up, but she refused to drink it, turning her head away and flapping her wings indignantly. All day, she’s just been sitting there with this ridiculous expression on her face, and her tongue has become dry with air exposure!
I have no idea what is going on with this chick and don’t know if she’s acquired some disease and maybe needs medical attention? Should I call some rescue and bring her over?? Or is this some bizarre hummingbird thing I don’t know about? I just don’t want her to die! Please help!

How do I attract a greater variety of birds to my bird feeders?

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with 5 Comments

I live in the Midwest and enjoy feeding the birds. I feed sunflower seeds, suet cakes, thistle, and sugar water. I also have a bird bath. I get a nice variety of cardinals, sparrows, chickadees, finches, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, and even an occasional duck — but is there something could offer to bring in rarer birds? Like Orioles? Bluebirds? Doves? More? I live near a creek, greenway and several large, heavily wooded parks.
Thanks — all your answers are great; I’ll give them a try. Unfortunately, I can’t leave a thumbs up — "Pollice verso" — for all of you as a "Level 1," but if I could, I would.

I found a hummingbird. help me!!!?

Me and my boyfriend found him during a fight.
Apparently they are "messangers of love" and taking care of him kinda brought us together.
We names him Predator and hes very trusting…

Unfortunatly, now it needs me.
It doesn’t appear to be a baby because hes big but it doesnt have feathers on his stomach and he looks like hee may be missing a feather on his tail but I cant tell.

He trusts me enough to hold him and feed him, he doesnt struggle and he licks the "hummin bird food" sugar water right off my fingers (which i wash very well before feeding). He chirps when he’s hungry and I feed him (and he stops) , I need to know if this is all he needs ? Hes chirping right now and he keeps opening his mouth like he wants something more than nector? Does he need bugs?

Also I would like to know why he cant fly… He tries really hard and can hover slightly but just falls.

Luckily he seems to trust me. Dont tell me to find someone else to take care of him… tell me what I can do now…

Please help me.

RatDog – go kill yourself.

To the rest…

I dont care enough about it to take it to a place. Im staying home alone for the week and dont have my car. Nobody wants to drive me to a bird protection place my friends would just tell me to get it high. So I cannot do anything about it.

Trust me I dont want the bird… I have to wake up in the middle of the night to "chirp chirp feed me!!!" and I cant even go out without bringing it.. I left it for an hour today and I came home and it had tried to fly and crashed and gotten stuck. So lay off unless you have good advice.

Like I said my boyfriend and I found it on the ground in my yard.

Whoever gave me that formula thank you. Im going to definatly try that this minute – best answer for u

thankyou to the person who told me sugar water for too long will kill it.

When I found it, it couldnt fly.

If he dies he dies.. he would have died faster if I hadnt had picked it up cuz my dog would have devoured it

so help

How long does it take for the sugar water in a hummingbird feeder to go bad?

I have one by my garage with flowers underneath it. But not a whole bunch of hummingbirds come around. So, how long should I wait to dump out the sugar water?

I found a baby hummingbird, how do I care for it?

Posted by Filed Under hummingbird with 3 Comments

I found a hummingbird on the ground yesterday. It didn’t seem to have any physical injuries, but when it tried to fly it would stop midflight and fall, or bump into a tree or a fence. It also doesn’t appear to be sick, it’s eating well (sugar water) and chirping. I’m assuming it’s a baby hummingbird that fell out of its nest, because it’s smaller and has a few down feathers along with its adult feathers.

My local wildlife center has advised I simply leave it somewhere, but I’m afraid, because I can’t return it back to where I believe its nest was (children were harassing it, and other birds were pecking it) but I also can’t just leave it somewhere random because it will most likely die of starvation or get attacked by something else.

If I care for it, will it eventually learn to fly and I’ll be able to release it? Or will it become dependent on me? If it does, what do I do? Keep it as a pet? Or can it be rehabilitated back into the wild?

What else should I feed it besides sugar water and commercial hummingbird nectar? Also, are those hummingbird flower mites harmful to the bird? Because they’re crawling all over his beak and I don’t want them to hurt him. I know a lot of questions, but I want to be sure I’m doing the right thing.

my chick seems to be struggling to breathe?

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with 4 Comments

yesterday i took my baby chick to the vet, because he has a bad leg (he was born with it). the vet said to work his leg (his joint is bad), and he also said i should be giving him some sugar water to get him hydrated and putting him back in the incubator so he could be in the humidity. so we asked if hummingbird food was okay, and he said yeah, so we gave him some. we also put him back in the incubator. after all that, he started acting weird. he would open his mouth and stretch out his neck, and make a kind of clicking noise. it’s not like chirping, it’s clicking coming from somewhere. so anyway, we thought he was still hungry but didn’t want to overload his belly, so we waited a while. then he was breathing heavy, so i thought maybe he was too hot in the incubator (100 degrees). so i took him out of it, and he’s still doing it. fed him more later on, and it seemed to stop a little, but then continued. so then the idea that he can’t breathe well arose. this was last night, and i was afraid he wouldn’t make it through the night. well he did, but he’s still doing it. the other chick was pecking him, so he’s back in the incubator. i’ve been giving him some sugar water, but mostly water. i can’t see if he has something lodged in his nostril because he’s so tiny. it’s hard to see. what can i do? he’s such a fighter, i don’t want him to go because of this :( what can i do for him? what’s going on??
i’m starting to think he’s just hungry/thirsty, and knows i feed him. because if i sneak into the room, he looks totally normal. but once he sees me, he starts stretching his neck again. he’s not breathing heavy anymore. i think he’s just learning who feeds him, and wants more.
oh and i have chick crumbs for them already.

Help! Injured Hummingbird!?

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with 4 Comments

So the nieghborhood cat got a hold of a baby humming bird!!!! I placed him in a little box with twigs, and moss on the bottom, and fed him some sugar water. I don’t think anything is broken, but he can’t fly. After a while of eating the water, he got kinda spaztic, and tried to fly.

I noticed some of his feathers under one of his wings is missing. I read on the internet that a hummingbird can survive about 4 hours with out food, but anylonger and he’ll die.

I don’t know what to do. I called my local animal shelter and they basically said to put him outside (in the cold mind you) and if he was there in the morning bring him in, and they could see what they could do. I asked her if they were going to kill him and she said, "Well if it looks like he won’t recover.." I don’t trust that…

I don’t know what to do!!!! HELP!!!!
