Sounds of Hummingbirds

You can hear their chirps and wings. Sorry about the back light, but this is the best angle I could use to pick up their sound

Hummingbird Ruby Throated

The first segment was taken at 6:15 am and its still dark at that time of the morning. Not the best quality, but shows interaction of the birds throughout the day. Very territorial as they are I am only 2 meters away on parts of this video sitting outdoors. To my surprise the Downy Woodpecker though hesitant did visit the feeder while I sat there towards the end… Disclaimer – I do not own the rites to this music. All credit goes to the original artist. Birding Ecuador Part IV; The Southwest

Covers Feb 14-18 when we moves south, from the Manglares-Churute area to Buenaventura NP (staying at Umbrellabird Lodge), then to Jorupe with some Moth Mania-photos inserted and a trip down to Zapotillo. That’s when the film ends, since we had more adventures in the south than fit into one part. Had to split it up! Feb 14 starts very wet. We learn that access to Manglares-Churute isn’t possible because that same wet weather has been on it for a while. Back-up place Tamarind was a treat, and thankfully the rain stopped! Bird seen at those places (incl views along the highway) are Horned Screamer (photo), Rufous-headed Chachalaca, Pacific Hornero, Northern Violaceous Trogon, Scale-crested Pygmy-Tyrant (photo) and a preening Pacific Royal Flycatcher mightily out of focus… This AF-thing is a curse that follows me through the trip. The focus tends to pounce on things in the background, even when the background is a small percentage of what’s in the frame. I knew there was a way to manage the focus manually but simply hadn’t been able to figure it out and the camera lacked good handbook. It turned out that you have to go online and find the data on the web. Suffice to say I didn’t manage that while in Ecuador! To make up for the tawny blur I have an inserted, perfect photo from my trusted camera! Anyway, the adventure continues. We drive towards Cuenca and of course stop at El Cajas NP, high altitude habitat. This is THE place to go in the world if you want to see Violet

Listed at 9900. www.houseforsalemexico.com Please see our photo album here: www.flickr.com We created this house and nature refuge in our backyard in Fraccionamiento Corazon de Durazno in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, Mexico. The house construction was finished in October 2006 and landscaping was begun in February 2007. This video was made in July 2010. Everything you see was planted by us and it all grew to its present state in about 3.5 years. My husband terraced the lot with only a shovel and wheelbarrow. He built an upper and lower yard area with a set of steps to connect the two areas. He built the retaining walls of rocks of different sizes and he built the arbor over the stairway. Together we made the pond with cascading waterfalls, which quickly became popular with birds of all colors bathing together in the shallow areas of the falls. Although we have next door neighbors, our backyard is totally private and secluded with no other houses visible. It is a private paradise. The only thing we did not plant was one Michoacan Pine tree in the north corner of the backyard–it was there already. The plantings include angel trumpets (Brugmansia), princess tree (Tibouchina), peach trees, cedar trees, ash trees, bottlebrush trees, pink peppercorn trees, ficus trees, pine trees, cypress tree, grenadas (pomegranates) lantanas, roses, lavenders, mexican sages (Salvia leucantha), calendulas, coreopsis, cosmos, dozens of varieties of succulents, various wild salvias, scheffleras

Downy Woodpecker at Hummingbird Feeder Part 2

Posted by Filed Under Hummingbird Bird Feeder with No Comments

I have heard of Black Capped Chickadees taking nectar at the Hummingbird feeder, but never a Downy Woodpecker. All these years of feeding Hummers this was my first encounter. This Downy has been coming to the feeder for over a week now, must like the nectar or my secret ingredients. Sorry not as clear as I had hoped since it was taken from the inside of the house and sorry about the quality, it is lacking… Disclaimer – I do not own the rites to this music. Hundreds of hummingbirds stop here during their fall migration. I was there a week after the hummingbird festival, and the feeders were very busy. Several great viewing areas and friendly staff make it a wonderful place to visit. I could have stayed much longer…
