We have hummingbird feeders on our front porch and love hummingbirds, however, we now have…?

September 9, 2011 hummingbird

…"trojan" sized wasps that are
loving the hummingbird juice. Any recommendations? I can’t find any wasp nests. Those pests are ruining our time on the front porch. Thanks!

move the feeders away from the home.

spray with nonstick stuff such as "PAM",,trust me it works and the birds dont mind it

This is a good question. The best advice I have is to get a different type of feeder. There are saucer-shaped feeders that keep the level of the food low. The hummingbirds have long enough tongues to get in them, but the wasps do not. The brands I’ve seen most recommended are the HummZinger and the Perky Pet. Amazon has them both:

If you don’t want to buy a new feeder, there are a few things to try, but none of them are foolproof:

**If you haven’t already, try putting up one of those yellow jacket/wasp traps nearby.

**You can also try moving the feeder across the porch. The hummingbirds are smart and should find it again, while the wasps are dumb (we hope!)

**Try taking the feeder down for three or four days. The wasps may never return once they think the food source has dried up.

**Wasps are also attracted to the color yellow, so remove any yellow parts of the feeder and make sure there’s nothing yellow near the feeder.
